Jira Service Management vs Hesk

Looking for a Jira ticketing alternative? Hesk may fit when your team needs a dependable request desk rather than a full IT service management platform. It covers email and web tickets, forms, assignments, filters, customer accounts, reports and a knowledge base with less setup. Jira Service Management is the stronger choice for incidents, problems, changes, assets, on-call work, development integration, AI and enterprise service management.

Why teams choose Hesk instead of Jira Service Management

Jira Service Management can do far more than basic ticketing. That is valuable only when the organization needs those extra layers.

When Jira Service Management fits better

Jira is the better investment when service management is tied to IT operations and development.

  • Incident, problem and change management
  • Assets and configuration relationships
  • On-call schedules, alerts and AIOps
  • Jira, CI/CD and marketplace integrations
Hesk is not a small version of Jira Service Management. It is a focused help desk. Choose it when that narrower scope is an advantage, not when the team needs a CMDB, change program or operations platform.

Jira Service Management is now part of Service Collection

Atlassian's current pricing groups Jira Service Management with Customer Service Management, Assets and Rovo. Older names such as Jira Service Desk and Jira ticketing system still appear in searches.

The free cloud plan deserves a real look. A three-agent team may find it very capable. Hesk becomes more attractive when the team wants a focused interface, more paid agents at a predictable cost, or an ordinary self-hosted deployment that remains available to new users.

Jira Service Management vs Hesk, feature by feature

Hesk and Jira Service Management both receive and track requests. Beyond that shared foundation, they serve different levels of operational complexity.

Flat Hesk Cloud plans versus per-agent Standard pricing

Move the slider to compare Hesk Cloud's monthly list price with Service Collection Standard at $20 per agent per month.

How many paid agents do you need?

The calculator selects the smallest Hesk Cloud plan that covers the team. It does not compare the free plans or the extra ITSM capabilities included with Atlassian.

Hesk Cloud monthly$29.99Cloud plan | up to 10 agents
Service Collection Standard$200.00$20 per agent per month

Monthly public list prices before taxes. The plans are not feature-equivalent. Service Collection Free supports up to three agents, and annual Atlassian billing may use tiered pricing.

Do not ignore Jira's Free plan. It can be the cheaper cloud option for up to three agents if its limits fit. Once a team needs paid agent seats, Hesk Cloud's flat pricing becomes less expensive from two agents upward at the current monthly list rates.

Where Hesk is enough, and where Jira is worth it

A focused support desk and a broad ITSM platform should not be judged by the same checklist.

Choose Jira Service Management when

  • The organization runs a formal incident, problem and change process.
  • Assets, services and configuration relationships must be managed.
  • On-call schedules, alert routing and AIOps belong in the service desk.
  • Service work must connect directly with Jira development and CI/CD.
  • Approvals, complex SLAs, automation and governance justify the administration.
  • Rovo AI and virtual service agent capabilities are part of the plan.
  • The wider Atlassian ecosystem is already central to the business.

Know what Hesk does not try to replace

Hesk can replace Jira ticketing for a straightforward desk. It cannot replace a mature ITSM and operations program.

Do not choose Hesk when

  • You need a CMDB or asset lifecycle system.
  • Incident, problem and change records must follow formal ITIL processes.
  • On-call schedules, alert routing and service health belong in the platform.
  • Development work and support work must share Jira issues and deployment controls.
  • AI agents, advanced enterprise analytics or a large app marketplace are required.

Think twice about Jira when

  • The project is really a small email and web ticket desk.
  • No one has time to own Jira configuration and governance.
  • Many occasional agents need access and per-agent pricing is hard to justify.
  • Staff need a short learning curve more than workflow depth.
  • A new, ordinary self-hosted deployment is important.
  • The extra ITSM capabilities will remain unused.

Do not turn a ticket desk into an ITSM project by accident

Jira Service Management is powerful. It also asks the team to make more product and process decisions.

Every IT help desk needs full ITSM

Many internal teams only need a reliable place to receive, assign and resolve requests. Formal incident, problem, change and asset programs are useful only when the organization is ready to run them.

The free Jira plan settles the price question

It may settle it for a three-agent team. The calculation changes when more paid agents, storage, assets, premium capabilities or marketplace apps are needed.

Developers use Jira, so support should use it too

Shared tooling can be valuable, but customer support and internal request staff may not need the same issue model, terminology or administration as software teams.

Data Center is a long-term self-hosting path for new buyers

Atlassian stopped new Data Center sales to new customers in March 2026 and plans to end affected Data Center products in March 2029. That timeline belongs in any deployment decision.

What should different teams choose?

The answer changes with the maturity of the service operation.

Three-agent internal help desk

Try both free options. Service Collection Free provides a generous hosted ITSM starting point. Hesk Free gives you a self-hosted ticket desk without a three-agent software limit.

Ten-person support team

Start with Hesk if the work is mostly tickets. Flat Cloud pricing and a focused interface can save substantial cost and administration.

DevOps or site reliability team

Choose Jira Service Management. Alerts, on-call schedules, incidents, services, AIOps and development links are the reasons to buy it.

HR, facilities or general business requests

Hesk may be enough. Categories, private fields, permissions, custom statuses and due dates can cover a focused request desk without a broad service platform.

Company already standardized on Atlassian

Jira Service Management often makes sense. Shared identity, Jira work, Confluence knowledge and Atlassian governance may outweigh the added cost.

Small team that requires self-hosting

Hesk is the accessible path for a new deployment. Jira Data Center is an enterprise product in a published wind-down toward 2029.

Jira's largest cost may be administration, not the license

Jira Service Management can standardize a serious service operation. To get that value, someone must own the platform and the processes around it.

  • Design request types, forms, workflows and queues
  • Set permissions, organizations and notification rules
  • Define SLAs, calendars, approvals and automation
  • Maintain Assets schemas and service relationships
  • Review marketplace apps and integration permissions
  • Govern Jira and Atlassian configuration changes
  • Train agents on the issue model and terminology
  • Monitor plan allowances and usage-based charges

Move the support process, not every Jira concept

Jira objects, workflows and ITSM records do not have one-to-one equivalents in Hesk.

Choose the right projects

Identify the service projects that are truly ticket desks. Leave incident, change, asset and development projects in Jira if they still need those capabilities.

Map the useful fields

Convert request types, categories, priorities, statuses, assignees, custom fields and customer organizations into a simpler Hesk structure.

Test one request flow

Run email intake, portal submission, assignment, replies, attachments, due dates, notices and reports with a small group.

Preserve the old history

Use backups, CSV or APIs for the data that must move. Keep Jira read-only when complex comments, attachments or ITSM records are not worth transforming.

A smaller model is often the point of switching. Do not recreate every Jira status, issue type and workflow unless staff still use it.

See Hesk before you decide

Preview the ticket list, settings and customer knowledge base. You can then try the filters, forms and day-to-day workflow in the live demo.

Jira Service Management vs Hesk questions

Answers to common questions about Jira ticketing, Service Collection, ITSM, pricing, self-hosting and migration.

Is Hesk a good Jira Service Management alternative?

Yes, for teams that mainly need email and web ticketing, customer or employee request forms, assignments, due dates, filters, reports and a knowledge base. Jira Service Management is the better choice when formal ITSM, asset and configuration management, incident response, change control, development integration, AI or a large marketplace are required.

Is Jira Service Management the same as the Jira ticketing system or Jira Service Desk?

Jira Service Desk was renamed Jira Service Management in 2020. Atlassian now sells Jira Service Management as part of Service Collection, together with Customer Service Management, Assets and Rovo. People still search for Jira ticketing system or Jira Service Desk, but the current product and pricing pages use Jira Service Management and Service Collection.

Which costs less, Hesk Cloud or Jira Service Management?

Jira Service Collection has a free cloud plan for up to three agents. Standard is currently listed at $20 per agent per month, while Hesk Cloud uses flat monthly or annual plans for up to 10, 50 or 200 agents. For paid cloud use, Hesk Cloud is less expensive from two agents upward at current monthly list prices. The products have very different ITSM capabilities, so cost should not be the only test.

Can I self-host Hesk or Jira Service Management?

Hesk can be installed on an ordinary PHP and MySQL server and is available to new customers. Jira Service Management has a Data Center edition for self-managed infrastructure, but Atlassian ended new Data Center sales to new customers on March 30, 2026 and plans to end the affected Data Center products on March 28, 2029.

Which is better for internal IT support?

Hesk works well for straightforward internal requests such as access, hardware, software, facilities and general support. Jira Service Management is stronger when the IT team also manages incidents, problems, changes, services, on-call schedules, alerts, assets and configuration relationships.

Which is better for asset management and a CMDB?

Jira Service Management is the clear choice. Service Collection Standard and higher plans include Assets and configuration management with plan allowances. Hesk can store asset details in ticket fields or a knowledge base, but it is not a CMDB and does not manage asset relationships or lifecycle records.

Which is better for forms, queues and automation?

Jira Service Management is stronger for complex forms, workflows, queues, approvals and automation. Hesk provides flexible category-specific fields, assignments, statuses, due dates, notices and cloud escalation tools, which are often enough for a smaller request desk and take less time to administer.

Does Hesk have Jira Service Management AI features?

No. Hesk does not include Rovo agents, AI search, a virtual service agent or AI-assisted incident management. Those capabilities are part of Atlassian Service Collection across different paid plans.

Which is better for software development teams?

Jira Service Management is usually better because service requests, incidents and changes can connect closely with Jira development work, CI/CD tools, alerts and the Atlassian ecosystem. Hesk is a separate help desk and is better when that development connection is not needed.

Does Hesk provide a customer portal and knowledge base?

Yes. Hesk includes a customer-facing submission form, secure ticket tracking, optional customer accounts and a built-in knowledge base. Jira Service Management also includes a portal, forms, queues and an embedded knowledge base, with broader chat and collaboration options.

Can I migrate from Jira Service Management to Hesk?

Hesk does not advertise a one-click Jira Service Management importer. Atlassian cloud backups and APIs can provide work items, fields, users, comments and attachments, but ITSM objects and workflow rules do not map directly to Hesk. Export a small project first, decide which history matters and keep Jira available during the transition.
